Hello, and welcome to the development blog for Masters of Mancala. Sam and Elijah are working together to make this game a reality. The idea is simple - move gems around a playing board to capture them for your own. Player with the most gems at the end wins!

All good things come to an end

Unfortunately this game came to an end before it became good :)

After being unable to work on it for a while I lost interest in the project. Since I halted progress on this game I have completed multiple other projects: releasing a new version of GMNewton, a 3d waterslide simulator, and a 3d domino simulator. Not bad 'eh? Not too much effort was wasted however, because I learned in the process.

More structure interface coded

I coded a few more functions to find:
  1. Pocket of current player
  2. Opposite hole
  3. The side a hole belongs to

I also fixed a little problem -(for those of you who don't program, one tiny wrong word can bring BIG problems)- in my code to find the next hole.
After a short break, I will be attempting to get a simple ai up and running to play against.  'Artificial intelligence' might not be the right name though - this one will only be making random moves ;).  A more complex ai with decision making capabilities is planned for the future.

Movement

I just got movement to work!  I can now click on any pocket, and it calculates the new gem positions accurately.  The movement is instant so it doesn't look very pretty, but I'll get there :)

First screenshot

I just thought I'd post a screenshot so far. Not to show off the placeholder graphics, but as a reference to look back in the future to judge how far the game has come.
Please note that these are just placeholder graphics :)

Board Data Structures

I just finished implimenting the data structures to hold the board information, and am now working on an interface for the game and ai to interact with it.

Introduction

"Once upon a time not so very long ago, two homeschoolers sat together once their work was done. One 17, the other 15. Between them was formed a concept. Little did they know, but this idea would would change the world forever. What was it? Masters of Mancala."

"Enough with the story telling already..."

"Okay, sorry!"

To get to the point, Masters of Mancala is a game in conception. Mancala is a game originated in ancient times. Many variations have developed over time, but the basic concept remains the same. We are attempting to campture this concept and convert it into a fun, competiteve, and playable computer game. We are calling this game "Masters of Mancala". It's goal? To be the best computerized mancala game around. With solid simple game play, Masters of Mancala will be easy for anyone, young or old, to pick up and play.

I hope you enjoy watching the developement of Masters of Mancala!
